Letter from Our President:
A Visit to Belize in November 2016
As we begin our annual FBB fall fundraiser, I want to share with you several stories of our success in supporting students and communities in Belize. This is the first. (Stay tuned for future emails with more stories and photos!)
In Mid-November a group of 12 generous FBB donors, including ten Rotarians from the Rotary Club in Lake Oswego, Oregon, plus my husband and myself, traveled to Belize and visited many of our FBB scholars. One visit was to Orange Walk Technical High School in northern Belize in Orange Walk district. It is a school of approximately 800 students that draws from several of the surrounding villages.
Upon our arrival, we were greeted by Licia Castillo, counselor, Mr. Polanco, principal, other staff members, and our five FBB scholarship recipients: Emily, Darleni, Indyra, Dishawn, and Sayra. I presented each awardee with a certificate acknowledging him/her as a FBB scholar and also a FBB T-shirt (see photo below). The students in turn told us a little about themselves and what our scholarships mean for them and their families.
Tears were shed as the students explained how the scholarships help to relieve stress and anxiety of not being able to continue their schooling without the support of generous FBB donors like the Rotary Club and others. All five students rank among the top three of their classes and are involved in peer counseling and community service. Emily also participates in choir and in closing sang a heartfelt and beautiful solo for us.
Upon our return from Belize, I sent a thank-you note to Licia telling her how much we appreciated the school’s hospitality. Here is her response:
“It was our pleasure to show you the difference you all make. You all don’t just give them an education, you give them a life and hope for a better future….Thank you for taking the time out to visit our humble school.”
Our fundraiser theme this year is “Fall Into the Season of Gratitude.” You can see by the heartfelt comments of Licia that our scholarships are truly making a difference for these students and that their gratitude is overwhelming. Please help us continue our support by donating generously to Full Basket Belize during this season.
Thank you!
